Pitcairn Islands' Solar Eclipse Tour 2019 - 19 Days / 18 Nights - from $16250* per person (ex Tahiti with Pitcairn Islands Tourism).

Join us for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Pitcairn Islands Tourism is pleased to present our 2019 small group Total Solar Eclipse Voyage. On this tour, visit three of the most isolated islands on the planet; secluded Oeno Island which lies in 2019's Total Solar Eclipse "Path To Totality", legendary Pitcairn Island, home to the HMAV Bounty Mutineers, and Henderson Island - UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On Tuesday, July 2nd, 2019, a total solar eclipse will take place in Earth’s southern hemisphere. The eclipse will occur almost entirely over the Southern Pacific Ocean, but it will make landfall at Pitcairn's Oeno Island. As Oeno lies in the "Path to Totality" of the 2019 solar eclipse, this unique 18-night tour will offer you the chance of a lifetime to view this historic event as well as explore UNESCO World Heritage Site, Henderson Island, and visit Pitcairn Island, the most remote inhabited island on earth with a population of less than 50 residents--many of whom are direct descendants of the HMAV Bounty Mutineers.

About Our Expert Tour Guide, Dr. John Hearnshaw:

Emeritus Professor of Astronomy, University of Canterbury

After graduating from Cambridge with a science degree in 1967, Dr. John Hearnshaw completed a PhD in astronomy at the Australian National University in Canberra. After finishing a doctoral thesis, Dr. Hearnshaw joined two short research fellowships, the first at the Paris Observatory and the second one at Harvard and the Smithsonian Institution in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Hearnshaw returned to New Zealand to a lecturing position at the University of Canterbury where he was promoted to a professorship in 1995. He eventually retired in 2014 after 38 years. For 25 of those years, Dr. John Hearnshaw served as director of Mt John Observatory at Lake Tekapo, in three different periods. Dr. Hearnshaw spent much of his time developing new instruments to use at Mt John and training graduate students in astronomy (PhD and MSc).

During his time at Canterbury, Dr. Hearnshaw wrote six books on astronomy, most on the topic of the history of stellar astrophysics during the last 200 years. Dr. Hearnshaw currently works for the International Astronomical Union (IAU)-- the society for professional astronomers with roughly 12,000 members world-wide. From 2003 to 2012, Dr. Hearnshaw chaired the IAU Program Group for the World-wide Development of Astronomy, a job that entailed traveling to a wide variety of countries to give lectures, to advise on teaching astronomy and to promote research collaborations.

His travels have taken him to Mongolia, Cuba, Venezuela, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Mauritius, Fiji, North Korea, Uruguay, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, and recently in February 2018, to Pitcairn. There he worked with locals to submit their application for International Dark Sky Sanctuary status. On this tour, Dr. Hearnshaw will hope to congratulate Pitcairn's on its International Dark Sky Sanctuary Status at Pitcairn's famed Community Dinner.
