Arrive in Zurich, and then explore the charming cities of Bern and Lucerne, before spending most of your time in picturesque Interlaken, right in the heart of the Alps. Discover Interlaken, which once made the Victorians swoon with mountain vistas from the chandelier-lit confines of grand hotels; it makes daredevils scream with adrenalin-loaded adventures.
Arrival in Zurich
Upon arrival at Zurich airport you will pick-up your rental car and drive to the city centre and check in at the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, begin here your Switzerland culinary tour and take the opportunity to discover the world famous shopping mile Bahnhofstrasse or stroll along the banks of Lake Zurich. LOCAL SPECIALTY: If you can manage to pronounce this one, try Zurich Geschnetzeltes, made with small pieces of veal cooked in a creamy mushroom and white wine sauce. Past the Swiss capital and into fairytales
On the second day of your Switzerland culinary tour you will drive from Zurich to Bern (approx. 125km) and then on to Interlaken (approx. 60km). After arriving in the Swiss capital Bern, discover the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the arcades, at six km long; they are one of the longest weather-sheltered shopping promenades in Europe. LOCAL SPECIALITY: Bern is famous for its wholesome Berner Platte – a sumptuous dish containing a variety of meat and sausages such as beef, smoked pork and beef tongue. Drive on to discover Interlaken. Overnight in Interlaken.
Situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken offers an amazing diversity of sport and outdoor activities. Take a dip in the cool refreshing lake, enjoy a picnic by the water's edge, or soak up the sun at one of the regional lakeshore bathing. Discover Interlaken with over 45 mountain railways, cable cars, chair lifts and ski lifts lead to 200 kilometers of pistes and a dense network of hiking trails. DOES INTERLAKEN HAVE A LOCAL SPECIALTY? You could say that the desert - Coupe Nesselrode is the local specialty. It’s a delicious concoction based on meringue, ice cream, and industrial quantities of chestnut puree topped with cream. Overnight in Interlaken and prepare for the Jungfraujoch excursion the following day.
Jungfraujoch Excursion - The 'Top of Europe"
Next on your Switzerland culinary tour you will start your Jungfraujoch excursion and depart on the Jungfrau Railway, which leads through the heart of the mountains and up to the highest train station in Europe (3454 m), offers unbelievable views of the mountain giants Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, and of the Aletsch glacier, which is the longest glacier at 22 km in length. The Jungfrau railway travels from the heart of the mountains to Europe's highest lying mountain station. Additional worthwhile sights while on the Jungfraujoch excursion include the ice sculptures on the inside of the glacier, the adventurous "Sphinx" round tour, as well as the ultra-scenic "Top of Europe" glacier restaurant. After the Jungfraujoch excursion, spend the overnight in Interlaken.
Cheese and Chocolates
Option 1: Maison Cailler and Gruyere. Explore the lovely old medieval town of Gruyere with its castle and taste the world famous cheese of Gruyere, renowned for its unique flavor. Next stop is Broc with the well-known Maison Caillier, chocolate factory of Nestlé. Discover the process of chocolate manufacturing and taste the chocolate. Option 2: Emmentaler Showdairy and Kambly Experience in Trubschachen. Excursion to First Mountain including First Flyer
Next on your Switzerland culinary tour travel by car to Grindelwald (approx. 20km) and continue by cable car to First Mountain. The First Flyer zipline promises pure thrills. You begin the ZipRider journey by riding up the scenic, 3-stage Grindelwald First Gondola. During the summer months the mountains are covered by what looks like a perfectly manicured green carpet with mountain cows grazing over the landscape. The rugged Alps and glaciers are in view from any direction and the Eiger is visible to the right from the top of the ZipRider. Once the gates open, you fly down the mountain, over the ski runs below, at speeds up to 100kph! The views are spectacular and breathtaking, to say the least. Overnight in Interlaken.
Interlaken to Lucerne and Zurich
Today you will drive from Interlaken to Lucerne (approx. 68km). The city on Lake Lucerne is the gateway to central Switzerland and is embedded within an impressive mountain panorama. Visit the Chapel Bridge - one of Europe's oldest wooden bridges. Lucerne is nostalgic (its emotive lion sculpture, its fondness for tradition), as well as highbrow, with concerts at the acoustic marvel KKL (Kultur und Kongresszentrum) concert hall and the Sammlung Rosengart's peerless Picasso collection. What's the local specialty?
