Combine the historical town of Colonia del Sacramento and the capital city of Montevideo with a boutique winery stay. European immigrants introduced many varieties of both cheese and wine to Uruguay, leaving the country with a legacy of vineyards, wineries, artisan cheese producers and olive oil plantations. Discover both touristic and culinary highlights of Uruguay, and be prepared to be very pleasantly surprised!
Day 01: Colonia del Sacramento. On arrival into Colonia de Sacramento, transfer to your hotel. This afternoon meet your guide for a walking tour along cobbled streets of the UNESCO heritage listed old town. Visit the Spanish and Portuguese Museums and the see highlights of the town settled first by the Portuguese in the 18th century. End your day with a traditional 'mate' (tea) tasting and discover the cultural aspects of this typical tea so widely drunk throughout Uruguay. Overnight at your boutique hotel located on the banks of the River Plate.
Day 02: Colonia del Sacramento > Carmelo. After breakfast, travel by road to Carmelo, stopping en route to visit La Calera de las Huerfanas, the Jesuit Ruins where the Uruguayan history of wine began. Continue to one of the oldest vineyards in Uruguay, Almacen de la Capilla - Bodega Cordano. Enjoy wine tasting and a tour there before visiting the boutique winery of El Legado where you will experience the typical Uruguayan asado (bar-b-que) lunch. Afterwards continue towards the delightful boutique Finca Narbona Wine Lodge, your home for the next two nights.
Day 03: Carmelo. Enjoy a morning at leisure before a picnic lunch in the vineyards. In the afternoon you will take part in wine and cheese tasting in the cellar, guided by the Finca Narbona winemaker. This includes three different Narbona wines and several choices of cheese. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed sunset boat ride through the islands of the delta, where the waters of Rio de la Plata and Rio Uruguay meet.
Day 04: Carmelo > Montevideo. This morning transfer to the capital city of Montevideo and on arrival enjoy a walking tour of the city. Beginning in Independence Square, this tour takes you through the historic old town, visiting Constitution Square and the Cathedral, before visiting the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. End the tour at the Carnival Museum to learn more about the Spanish tradition and African roots of the carnival.
After lunch at the lively port market, your sightseeing continues to La Ciudad Nueva (the new city), with its wide and tree lined streets, home to many magnificent stores and residences. View the Palacio Legislativo (Congress), a multi-coloured marble building, one of the most sumptuous of Latin America. If time permits, you may also be able to visit the Museo del Gaucho (Museum of the Gaucho). Return to your hotel for an evening at leisure.
Day 05: Montevideo > Rocha. Depart Montevideo today and head towards Rocha, visiting a boutique olive oil plant along the way. This area is very rich in olive oil production and is known as the 'Uruguayan Tuscany' because of its Italian feel. Enjoy a guided tour of the production facilities, followed by a tasting of their olive oil. Then visit Vina Eden Winery and enjoy some tastings including a variety of locally produced varietals. Continue to your accommodation for the next two nights on a working estancia.
Day 06: Rocha > Cabo Polonia > Rocha. Today enjoy an excursion to the coast and the small village of Barra de Valizas. Enjoy a hike along the coastline viewing the sand dunes and gorgeous ocean views from Buena Vista Hill, before continuing to Cabo Polonio. After a delicious lunch at a local seaside restaurant, travel by 4x4 vehicle excursion to visit the lighthouse and one of the largest sea lion reserves in South America.
Day 07: Rocha > Jose Ignacio. After breakfast, visit the superb Bodega Garzon. For those who enjoy the taste of new experiences, spectacular views, top quality wines and gastronomy, this will prove a wonderful visit. Enjoy tastings and lunch here along with a tour of the winery, then visit nearby Pueblo Garzon, a small town where time seems to have stood still. Continue onto the small town of Jose Ignacio for your two night stay.
Day 08: Jose Ignacio > Punta del Este > Jose Ignacio. Enjoy a tour to the popular beach resort town of Punta del Este, which sits on a narrow strip of land bordered on one side by the 'Playa Brava', an ocean beach with large waves, and a much more sheltered and gentle beach on the other side. Very popular in the summer months as a venue for beach holidays for Uruguayans, it is a quaint town with galleries and some excellent restaurants.
Return to your hotel and this evening enjoy a cooking class at the home of a local chef. This special cooking class includes a hands-on instruction by a professional local chef, so that you take not only your memories home, but also some great recipes and cooking techniques.
Day 09: Jose Ignacio > Montevideo. After breakfast return back to Montevideo, where services end at the airport.
