Enjoy this tailor made itinerary to a fascinating but less travelled corner of Northwest Argentina. Explore the highlights with traces of pre-Columbian cultures, forts and historic buildings dating back to the time of the Spanish conquest and early colonization. Travel a scenic circular route from Salta visiting Purmamarca with its richly coloured mountains from the many minerals they contain, and explore a region with stunning landscapes contrasting high peaks to the plains and salt pans. Visit Cafayate, home to the superb Torrentes wine growing area.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Salta. Arrive and transfer to your hotel where you will spend two nights in this city known for its Andean culture and colonial architecture. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Day 2: Salta. Today explore with your guide during a morning tour of the city and surrounding area. Uncover the rich history and heritage of Salta, the cultural hub of Argentina's northwest. Admire the city's glorious colonial architecture, visiting striking landmarks such as the Cathedral of Salta and San Francisco Church, and taking in the views from San Bernardo Hill. Visit the nearby village of San Lorenzo, frequented by wealthy families from Salta during the summer because of its unusual subtropical microclimate. You'll then have the chance to immerse yourself in the city's history as you stand before the Battle of Salta monument and General Guemes statue. Round off the tour by shopping for unique souvenirs at Salta's lively artisan markets. Return to your hotel and the remainder of the day is at leisure.

Day 3: Salta > Purmamarca > Tilcara > Humahuaca > Purmamarca. Depart this morning to visit the Quebrada de Humahuaca, where we will be visiting Purmamarca with the famous hill of seven colours, believed to hold Godlike power in tribal times. Visit the Plaza to see traditional crafts at the artisan stalls and the small adobe church. Afterwards continue to Tilcara, which is known as the archaeological capital of the Northwest and here you will enjoy a visit to Pucara and the Archaeological Museum. Also visit the church at Uquia with its famous paintings before returning to Purmamarca for your two night stay.

Day 4: Purmamarca > Iruya > Purmamarca. After breakfast enjoy an excursion to the mountainous town of Iruya, with access through the narrow and winding roads to this town with its pre-Columbian architecture that reflects its origin of great culture and history.

Surrounded by a stunning scenery and anchored in the past, Iruya preserves the roots of an ancient culture that even today is evident throughout its typical celebrations such as the festival of Pachamama in August, when the local people celebrate their connection to the 'Mother Earth'.

Day 5: Purmamarca > Salta. Return back to Salta with a leisurely drive passing through San Salvador de Jujuy.

Day 6: Salta > Cafayate > Salta. Experience a full day tour to Cafayate which is famous for the torrontes wine production. During the drive through the Quebrada de Cafayate (declared a Natural Monument by UNESCO due to the formation and colour of the hills) you can appreciate different formations made by wind and rain erosion. Some of the more famous ones include the Devil's Throat, the Amphitheatre, El Sapo (the frog), El Fraile, the Obelisk and the Castles.

Arrive into Cafayate, a town located in the Calchaqui Valleys and enjoy a wine cellar visit with lunch.

The Calchaqui Valleys are a series of beautiful highland valleys that enjoy over three hundred days of sunshine a year, a dry climate and much cooler summers than the lowland plains around Salta. The fertile land, irrigated with canals and ditches that capture the plentiful snowmelt from the high mountains to the west, is mostly given over to vineyards - among the world's highest - that produce the characteristic Torrontés grape.

Afterwards return to your hotel in Salta for your last evening in the Northwest.
